TOUR 4 : LEVANTINE EXPERIENCE
(16th April 2009 - Tour for accompanying person)
(14h00 - 17h30) Today guests will go on a walking tour of Pera whichwas the city of the Levantines, now called Beyoglu. Highlights in the walking tour are a stroll along Istiklal Caddesi (*), the notorious Flower Passage (**) and the Galata Tower (***).
(*) Istiklal Caddesi, Beyoglu’s main street, has a large number of impressive 19th century buildings, many churches, imposing former embassy buildings (now consulates) and picturesque alleyways and side-streets branching off it. After a long period of decline -till the 1980ies- this area has conducted plenty restorations to major buildings in the 1990ies and is now bending over backwards to recover to its former glory.
(**) The Flower Passage is known for its cafes and taverns and the picturesque fish-market behind it.
(***) The Galata Tower is a 14th century Genoese tower - the symbol of the Levantine city- which offers a panoramic 360 degree view on Istanbul from the top.
